Seeing as we're all such great scientists in PETNS, we are going to be running our annual science fair again this year! The date of science fair is Friday the 5th of April and all finished projects are to be brought in on Thursday the 4th at the latest! It's a great chance to show off your budding science skills and to showcase your knowledge! Parents are invited and encouraged to help children in their work!
Last year the projects were incredible and we hope to have more again this year! We are delighted to be celebrating the 22nd World Book Day (7th March) in Powerstown E.T.N.S. with a series of in-school events 4th – 8th March 2019. The main aim is to encourage children to explore the pleasure of books and reading. We kicked things off with some shared reading in our assembly families this morning!
Along with various in class activities, we are holding the following events in school during the week that we would love your support and encouragement in: ‘Strangest Place I Read a Book’ photo competition. Please give your photos to class teachers or send by email to [email protected]. The winners will be announced on the 7th March. Book Fair: Our book fair will be visiting our school from 5th – 12th of March. Each child has received book tokens for the fair. Dress as a Book Character Day on Thursday 7th March: your child is invited to come to school dressed as their favourite book character for the day! This will be an exciting day and I can't wait to see all the amazing characters! Shared Reading: You are invited to come and join us for ‘Shared Reading’ events in each class during the week. ‘Shared Reading’ is a fun time where parents read story books to small groups of children. Books in other languages are welcomed! ‘Shared Reading’ in your child's class will be on March 8th at 9am. We can't wait for another book-tastic week! Hi parents! Do you want to help our school win sports equipment or some funding for sports equipment? Powerstown ETNS is participating in Aldi's Rugby competition.
If you shop in Aldi and you spend €30 or more, ask for a rugby sticker. If we collect enough to fill a poster we can send it away and be in with a chance to win €50,000 or some fantastic sports equipment. The poster will be posted up outside our parents room. Children and families are welcome to bring in the stickers and put them up on this poster. Any support you can give us would be much appreciated! :) Hi Parents,
After seeing such wonderful artistic talent in my class this year, I would love for your children to consider entering something into this year's Texaco Children's Art Competition! To enter, your child's artwork must be a totally original design and work and it needs to be a minimum of A4 in size. If your child wishes to enter, please bring the child's art to me before next Friday February 15th for entry into the competition. For more information about this competition, please follow this link: https://www.texacochildrensart.com/about-the-competition/background-history I look forward to seeing what your children create! Today was a super fun day in the Redwood Class. We are learning about the procedural writing genre this term and I wanted to give the children come context for when we use this genre. What better way to do it than with some baking! We spent an hour in the staff room getting ourselves organised and making sure we had the right ingredients. We then made 4 delicious cakes in simple mugs following a simple recipe. After eating all the delicious cake, we decided the recipe wasn't detailed enough so we came back to class and wrote our very own recipe in a procedural writing style. The children loved it so much they decided it would be a great idea to share the recipe with you! Check out the recipe below :) Cake in a Cup by The Redwood Class
With this recipe, we are going to show you how to make a cake in a cup! You will need:
Method: 1. Measure the flour, sugar, cocoa powder and baking powder into your cup. 2. Next pour in the milk, stir in the oil and add the vanilla extract. 3. Combine all the ingredients very well until there are no more dry lumps. It should look gooey! 4. Place the mug in the microwave for about one minute, longer if it is not cooked. 5. Take out the mug, leave it rest for a minute. 6. ENJOY! This week was an exciting week for us in 3rd Class as we travelled to the city centre to visit our National Museum and see exciting fashion and clothing exhibits!
First, we visited the Collin's Barrack's location where we was exhibits of fashion and jewellery from the recent and distant past. The children loved the range of fabrics and the totally alien designs on show! We then travelled to Kildare Street to visit the National Museum of Archaeology where we saw a range of gold jewellery from The Bronze Age. The children were amazed to discover that the jewellery was over 3000 years old! We also visited the Bog Bodies exhibit where actual preserved human remains were on show. These bodies were preserved when they were buried in Irish bogs over 2000 years ago. The children saw perfectly preserved human hair and a bracelet worn by one of the men. It was fascinating and a wonderful way to end our study of fashion and clothing this month! Our student council Movie Night in term 2 takes place on Thursday, February 7th 2019. The Student Council voted to screen The Emoji Movie.
The screening will take place in the school hall on the big projector! Children are welcome to bring snacks and there will be a tuck shop selling treats on the night too. Children are welcome to bring along siblings, friends other family members. Tickets €5 (single) and €10 (family) will be on sale outside the school every morning and afternoon from Friday 1st February. Tickets will also go on sale online. The proceeds of the movie night will go towards Gardening equipment and plants for our School Garden. Please support our Movie night and bring all the family! Last week we had a wonderful guest speaker visit 3rd class as part of Heritage Week!
Iain is an expert on the life of the Vikings and he brought his expertise and many artefacts he has gathered through the years to share them with our class! His visit included an information session about the history of the Vikings in Ireland, the origins of the Vikings in Scandinavia and many fierce stories about them. He also brought his friend Ragnor with him who is a real Viking! He showed us a variety of viking clothes, tools, jewellery and weapons! It was a fascinating and informative visit that we really enjoyed! |
